Slick vs. Peel... a common question in my shop when doing a car!
Sometimes I split the difference... a "palpitable peel" I call it...
Back when shiny painted underbelly and ISCA show car finish was the norm in judged show poodles... I remember talking an owner into leaving some peel in his car.... I told him, " We get all freaked out about the right gloss and color of all these parts that are bolted on, correct colored plating, etc..."..but when it comes to the exterior paint you want me to make it look like a marble...!!!
IMHO.... an OE level car with all the correct detailed parts & finishes, etc.. just looks more coordinated and correct with some peel in the paint... still way nicer than they were originally, but still have that "new car look"...
All that being said... I still like a nice super staight slick paint job too!!... just depends on the car for me...
And contrary to popular opinion... creating a "palpitable peeled" original looking finish is MORE difficult than a slick dead flat one... again..IMHO...
How so? You can take a pretty crummy out of the gun paint job and sand the heck out of it, buff and have an awesome slick paintjob... more room to sand out screw-ups too.
To get that "right look" peel paint job, it takes a well sprayed initial job and a more skilled controlled sand and buff.
And one final point... some feel that leaving some peel makes a paint job have a better shine... because the light refracts at more angles... much like a diamond's facets...
